Abstract
ALDAMA CABALLERO, Arnaldo et al. Chronic multifocal paracoccidioidomycosis in women of reproductive - Case report. An. Fac. Cienc. Méd. (Asunción) [online]. 2025, vol.58, n.2, pp.90-95. ISSN 1816-8949. https://doi.org/10.18004/anales/2025.058.02.90.
Paracoccidioidomycosis is a systemic mycosis endemic in Paraguay caused by the Paracoccidioides brasiliensis complex. The development of molecular techniques allowed the identification of several species, with Paracoccidioides brasiliensis sensu stricto (S1) being the most frequent
Most cases occur in men of rural origin and exceptionally occur in women of reproductive age due to the protection conferred by estrogen.
We present the case of a 39-year-old woman of rural origin, with few palmo-plantar papular lesions, but with great pulmonary involvement and general condition that finally cause death, where Paracoccidioides brasiliensis sensu stricto (S1) could be determined as the etiological agent.
In an endemic country, even in women of reproductive age, this pathology should be suspected when these symptoms occur, and it is important to have determined the species in order to better understand the epidemiology of paracoccidioidomycosis
