PARQUET V, Guido; ORTIZ B, Silvia; SAMANIEGO A³, Castor  y  GIMENEZ V4, Alejandro. Percutaneous biliar drainage: Techniques and results. An. Fac. Cienc. Méd. (Asunción) [online]. 2005, vol.38, n.3, pp.61-67. ISSN 1816-8949.

Introduction: Decompression of the biliary tree can be accomplished using surgical, endoscopic, or percutaneous techniques. Percutaneous drainage procedures applied to obstructive jaundice offer promising results.       Methods: Nineteen patients with obstructive jaundice treated with percutaneous drainage were selected for this retrospective study. The objective was to review the indications, technique and results. All procedures were performed under imagenological guidance (ecography, radioscopy or axial computed tomography) and a pigtail catheter was placed using the Seldinger technique.       Results: Jaundice was due to an inoperable biliary malignancy in 18 patients. The last patient had a benign postoperative biliary stricture. In 12 cases, the proximal common bile duct was affected (above the cystic duct), and in 7 cases the distal common bile duct (bellow the cystic duct). In 84 % of the cases the biliary drainage was successful (16 % were not accomplished in the first try). Four complications are reported; all related to the bad general condition of the patients. Mortality was of 21 %.       Conclusions: Patients with inoperable malignant obstruction of the bile duct can be treated with percutaneous drainage. Preliminary results are good but can be improved.
