Abstract
ORTIZ, Luis. Academic Departmentalization: Perspectives and Orientations for Sociology, Faculty of Social Sciences, National University of Asuncion. Investig. estud. UNA [online]. 2025, vol.16, n.2, pp.41-59. ISSN 2070-0415. https://doi.org/10.18004/rdgic.investig.estud.una.2025.diciembre.3016024753.
This article analyzes the academic departmentalization model in contrast to the professorial model, proposing it as a structuring axis for the Sociology program at the Faculty of Social Sciences (FACSO) of the National University of Asuncion. The historical background, theoretical foundations and management, pedagogical and institutional perspectives of the departmental model are presented, highlighting its advantage to integrate teaching, research and extension in academic units organized as systems. Based on a review of Latin American experiences, it is argued that departmentalization favors organizational efficiency, university decentralization and teacher professionalization. In the specific case of FACSO, the proposal is organized in academic areas articulated to the curricular axes of the new curriculum approved in 2021. It is proposed that this model can strengthen the institutional framework of the Sociology program, constitute a reference for other programs and contribute to the democratic transformation of the public institutions in the Paraguayan higher education system.
