This article is based on the discursive evidence from person deprived of liberty in Paraguay, where various experiences of deprivation were found, influenced by factors such as sex and age, but primarily determined by the type of prison in which individuals were held. We aim to answer the question: Are there common experiences among incarcerated individuals in one type of prison that differ from those in other types? In response, we propose a typology of prisons in Paraguay, which includes: (1) small adolescent prisons, (2) overcrowded adolescent prisons, (3) exclusive women's prisons, and (4) prisons for adult men and mixed populations. This classification highlights that we cannot generalize or categorize all prisons in the same way, and it is expected to contribute, first, to understanding that some person deprived of liberty fares better in certain types of prisons, and second, to inform decisions about what works best for effective penal and penitentiary public policy in the country and the region.
