The work aims to contribute to the discussion on development theories, specifically focusing on agro-extractivism, from a Global South perspective, based on a brief historical and current review of ways in which connections with international markets have occurred and continue to occur in Paraguay. This type of connection was characterized in dependency theory as enclave economies; the concept conveys a form of exploitation of natural resources with weak or no ties to national economies. It highlights the use of physical coercion and the subordination of the national state to extraterritorial powers, facilitated by its capture by local elites lacking their own development agenda. The category remains useful for understanding current processes and for preventing their reproduction in emerging contexts, primarily through political means, which are related to emerging scenarios.
