Introduction:

Osteoarthritis of the temporomandibular joint is the most common degenerative disease in the stomatognathic system, with implications for the health of a large part of the world's population.

Objective:

To document the epidemiological, clinical and therapeutic aspects of osteoarthritis of the temporomandibular joint.

Materials and methods:

A review was carried out in the PubMed, SciELO, Scopus, Medline, HINARI and Researchgate databases and 61 articles related to the topic were selected and classified in the category of originals, review and case presentation.

Conclusions:

Two fundamental elements are needed for the identification and management of this disease, clinical examination and imaging. The treatment modality depends on the phase of the disease, in early stages there is a good response to conservative treatments, however sometimes radical behaviors must be resorted to.
