Introduction:

Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) can lead to complications requiring hospitalization.

Objective:

to evaluate the clinical characteristics of patients with SLE admitted to the National Hospital of Itaugua between 2022 and 2024,

Material and Methods:

a retrospective observational descriptive study. Ninety-seven clinical records of adult patients diagnosed with SLE, hospitalized in the medical clinic service were reviewed. Sociodemographic variables, comorbidities, reasons for admission, disease activity (SLEDAI), treatment and hospital stay were analyzed. The variables were analyzed by descriptive statistics using Epi Info v7.2 software.

Results:

The median age was 30 years, with a predominance of the 18-29 years age group (49.4%) and female sex (84.54%). Respiratory distress was the main reason for hospitalization and arterial hypertension the most common comorbidity. According to the SLEDAI scale, 50.52% presented severe disease activity. Infections were the most frequent complication (55.67%), and 48.5% were hospitalized for less than 10 days. Corticosteroids were the most commonly used drugs (91.75%), followed by immunosuppressants (85.57%).

Conclusion

: Most patients presented severe activity and infectious complications, highlighting the need for a comprehensive approach and close follow-up.
