FLEITAS GOIRIZ, Braulio Mauricio et al. Eruptive xanthomas as an initial manifestation of severe hypertriglyceridemia and type 2 diabetes mellitus: report of two cases. Rev. virtual Soc. Parag. Med. Int. [online]. 2026, vol.13, n.1, e13142606. Epub 17-Feb-2026. ISSN 2312-3893. https://doi.org/10.18004/rvspmi/2312-3893/2026.e13142606.
Eruptive xanthomas are orange-yellow papules that appear suddenly and act as a skin marker of severe dyslipidemia and metabolic decompensation.
We present two cases of young adults who consulted for papular eruptions on the trunk and extensor surfaces. In both cases, hypertriglyceridemia ≥ 500 mg/dL and type 2 diabetes mellitus were evident. Dermatoscopy and histology were consistent with eruptive xanthomas. Multidisciplinary management, including glycemic control, intensive lifestyle changes, and fibrates, was indicated. Recognition of these lesions allows for the initiation of appropriate cardiometabolic screening and reduces the risk of pancreatitis.
