Introduction:
Work is a right and people with epilepsy present a challenge for human resources officers given their peculiar clinical conditions and eventual limitations.
Objective:
To investigate the knowledge of human resources professionals regarding the management of workers with epilepsy
Methodology:
A cross-sectional descriptive observational design was applied to human resources professionals regarding the management of workers with epilepsy from various companies in the Central Department, Paraguay, during 2023. Data were collected with a multiple-selection survey.
Results:
Forty-one respondents were included. Regarding the conceptual consideration of epilepsy, 97.5% considered it a neurological disease and 2.4% considered it an incurable disease. Regarding activities that were not recommended, 61% considered that they should not operate heavy machinery, 54% that they should not do work that involves the use of sharp instruments, 44% that they should not drive, 37% that they should not carry weapons, 27% that They can perform job functions for disabled people. Concerning concealment of the diagnosis, 34.1% hide their diagnosis
Conclusions:
The heterogeneity of responses shows the poor education regarding epilepsy, the lack of knowledge regarding key regulations such as driving or carrying weapons, the poor regulations regarding the periodicity of medical reports, and the high perception of concealment of the diagnosis to avoid stigmatization. All these aspects should be optimized, educated, and regulated appropriately.
