The use of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs in workers of two hospital centers in the Central Department of Paraguay in the year 2024. Rev. virtual Soc. Parag. Med. Int. [online]. 2024, vol.11, n.1, e11122419.  Epub 20-Oct-2024. ISSN 2312-3893.  https://doi.org/10.18004/rvspmi/2312-3893/2024.e11122419.

Introduction:

The use of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) is a growing habit of the world population since it is the most consumed class of drugs due to the phenomenon of self-medication.

Objective:

The general objective of the study was to determine the characteristics of the use of NSAIDs in workers at two hospital centers in the Central Department of Paraguay.

Materials and methods:

An observational, descriptive, and cross-sectional design was applied. Workers from two hospital centers participated in the study during May and June 2024. An interview was conducted to collect data with three dimensions: the first measured demographic variables, the second the reason for use, and the third the adverse effects. The data were processed in the EpiInfo 7.2™ program. Approval was obtained from the institutional ethics committee.

Results:

One hundred thirty-one workers participated in the study, of which 86.26% consume some NSAIDs. Among these, 39.82% are administrative personnel, 31.85% are nurses and 28.31% are doctors. Own initiative was the most frequent indication.

Conclusion:

The results show the high use of NSAIDs among hospital workers. Therefore, it is important to implement educational programs and control policies as strategies for safer and more effective use.
