SANTOS BEZERRA, Mônica Vanderlei dos y ORTIZ JIMENEZ, Luís. Autism Spectrum Disorder: an analysis of the relationship between parental involvement and academic and social outcomes. Rev. Int. Investig. Cienc. Soc. [online]. 2026, vol.22, n.1, pp.119-132. ISSN 2226-4000. https://doi.org/10.18004/riics.2026.junio.119.
This study analyzes the role of the family in the school inclusion of students with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), with an emphasis on the relationship between parental involvement and the academic and social development of children. This is a qualitative, descriptive-exploratory study with a case study design, conducted at the Centro Horizonte Azul -- CHA (fictitious name), located in the municipality of Arapiraca -- AL, Brazil. The sample consisted of 62 participants, including 10 children with ASD, 41 caregivers, and 11 professionals from the multidisciplinary team. Data collection was conducted using methodological triangulation, involving semi-structured interviews, semi-open questionnaires, participant observation, and document analysis. The data were analyzed using thematic analysis, allowing the identification of categories related to parental engagement, communication between family and school, continuity of interventions in the home environment, and the determinants of family involvement. The results show that family involvement acts as a central mediating variable in the development of children, contributing to the consolidation of communicative, social, and behavioral skills. It was observed that more engaged families favor the generalization of learning and increase the effectiveness of interventions. Conversely, socioeconomic and institutional limitations impact the level of parental participation. It is concluded that the school inclusion of students with ASD should be understood as a systemic process, dependent on the articulation between family, school and multidisciplinary team, and the Family-Mediated Inclusion Systemic Model (FMISM) is proposed.
