Rev. Int. Investig. Cienc. Soc. [online]. 2025, vol.21, n.2, pp.215-228. ISSN 2226-4000.  https://doi.org/10.18004/riics.2025.diciembre.215.

Primary Health Care (PHC) in Chile is the entry point to the state system that provides access to diagnosis, treatment, and rehabilitation. However, not everyone has the same experience. This article analyzes barriers in PHC for transgender people and challenges in accessing essential medical services. Objectives: To identify barriers faced by transgender people when accessing PHC; to describe the types of discrimination they experience; to describe how this discrimination affects their health and quality of life; and to describe the psychological and emotional consequences of discrimination experienced by transgender people. Methodology: Qualitative research conducted in the Maule Region, Chile, using semi-structured interviews; data analysis was performed using pre-established categorizations based on the objectives. Results: Barriers faced by the transgender population include the use of legal names, a lack of trained professionals, and outdated data. The article also details types of discrimination and their psychological and emotional impact, including consequences such as anxiety, depression, and insomnia. Conclusion: Transgender people face multiple forms of discrimination, which affects both the medical care they receive and their well-being. Emphasis is placed on the urgent need to depathologize gender identity, promote inclusive policies, and raise awareness among healthcare professionals, updating systems to guarantee respectful services and inclusive environments in primary healthcare.
