PEDROZO, R et al. PHYSIOLOGICAL VARIATIONS IN SERUM CONCENTRATIONS OF SODIUM, POTASSIUM AND CHLORINE INHALF BREED RACE HORSES BEFORE AND AFTER EXERCISE. Compend. cienc. vet [online]. 2015, vol.5, n.2, pp.07-11. ISSN 2226-1761.  https://doi.org/10.18004/compend.cienc.vet.2015.05.02.7-11.

ABSTRACT. Physiological variations in serum sodium (Na +), potassium (K +) and chlorine(Cl) in half breed race horses before and after exercise were evaluated. Twenty equines, male and female, from 2 to 6 years of age were studied. Three blood samples were taken at different times: T0 (before the race), T1 (immediately after the race) and T2 (one hour after the race). Mean serum electrolytes expressed in mmol / L were: for T0: Na+ (133.9 ± 5.30), Cl- (112.7 ± 6.43), K+ (4.1 ± 0.54); T1: Na+ (133.2 ± 7.38), Cl- (113.4 ± 11.47), K+ (4.6 ± 1.15); and T2: Na+ (137.2 ± 6.23), Cl- (113.2 ± 8.31), K+ (3.9 ± 0.75). The results showed no statistically significant differences (p ? 0.05) between times T0, T1 and T2 to the average of the Na + and Cl- ions; instead the mean serum K + decreased (p ? 0.05) at T2 with respect to T1.

Palabras clave : serum electrolytes; half breed race horses; exercise.
