GAYOZO MELGAREJO, Elvio; RIVAROLA SENA, Cynthia y MARIN INSFRAN, Luis Francisco. Evaluation of the mutagenic activity of Carbendazim (Commercial Formulation) in Drosophila melanogaster by Somatic Mutation and Recombination Test. Rep. cient. FACEN [online]. 2024, vol.15, n.2, pp.84-91. ISSN 2222-145X. https://doi.org/10.18004/rcfacen.2024.15.2.084.
The land used for cultivation in rural areas of Paraguay is increasing over the years, and this is usually accompanied by the use of pesticides, among the most commonly used are systemic fungicides such as 2-methoxycarbamoyl-benzimidazole (carbendazim) used to control the attack of phytopathogenic fungi. It has been evidenced in model organisms that carbendazim could have effects on the reproductive system, however, genotoxicological studies are scarce. In this study the main objective is to evaluate the mutagenic activity of carbendazim (Commercial Formulation) in Drosophila melanogaster through the SMART assay (Somatic Mutation and Recombination Test). For this purpose, third instar transheterozygous flr 3 +/+mwh larvae of D. melanogaster were treated with different concentrations (1%, 5% and 10%) for 72 hours until eclosion. The LD50 was determined using Probit analysis at a concentration of 4.848% (R =0.966). Data obtained were analyzed using a Conditional Binomial statistical model α=β=0.05 (Kastenbaum-Bowman test). Obtained results suggest that carbendazim (Commercial Formulation) does not present mutagenic effects at these concentrations, however, a considerable decrease in the number of surviving individuals was observed, which could indicate an effect on the viability of the treated individuals.
