VAZQUEZ, Fabricio. Agricultural economic cycles of the contemporary Paraguayan Chaco (2005-2025): from the livestock boom to the return of agriculture. Poblac.Desarro. [online]. 2026, vol.32, n.62, pp.44-57. ISSN 2076-0531. https://doi.org/10.18004/pdfce/2076-054x/2026.032.62.044.
Economic diversification is necessary for regional development in the Paraguayan Chaco. Livestock farming has previously driven a cycle of economic growth thanks to the expansion of the agricultural frontier and has accelerated productive integration. This article addresses the beginning of a new economic cycle, that of agriculture (cotton, soybeans, corn, onions), which is integrated with but also complements the livestock cycle. The main objective was to understand the role played by agricultural revival in economic stabilization when livestock farming lost momentum. Based on a review of statistics, scientific literature, and interviews with qualified informants, it was possible to understand the mechanism of agricultural activation. The main result has been the description of the process of the return and boom of agriculture, through innovative production packages as well as technological adaptations, in a territorial context characterized by greater investments in communication infrastructures that favor all economic activities.
