Resumen
ORTIZ-AVILA, Elsa y MONTOYA-GARCIA, María Valeria Judith. Time use of female-headed single-parent households in Mexico, 2019. Poblac.Desarro. [online]. 2025, vol.31, n.60, pp.46-64. ISSN 2076-0531. https://doi.org/10.18004/pdfce/2076-054x/2025.031.60.046.
The interest in analyzing female-headed single-parent households stems mainly from the risks of vulnerability they face due to causes such as a reduced welfare regime, wage inequality, part-time work and precarious works. This situation forces single mothers to divide their day between productive and reproductive work to a greater extent than their counterparts in two-parent households. The aim of this paper is to explore how mothers in single-parent households distribute their weekly time between productive and reproductive work. To perform this analysis, time use indicators are calculated and an Ordinary Least Squares model is fitted. The source of information to be analyzed for this purpose is the 2019 National Time Use Survey. The results show that single-parent mothers spend less time at home than two-parent mothers, but more time in paid work. Women in single-parent CN and two-parent households are less likely to be engaged in paid activities because in their families other people can take on the role of providers, which would allow these women to engage in caring activities and thus follow mandates for gender.
