Abstract
VALLEJOS-ZARZA, Maisa Sofía and MERCADO-ORTIZ, Pedro Arnaldo. Prevalence of patients with HIV infection who present with AIDS marker diseases at the Hospital de Clínicas. Rev. Inst. Med. Trop. [online]. 2024, vol.19, n.2, pp.58-66. ISSN 1996-3696. https://doi.org/10.18004/imt/2024.19.2.7.
Introduction:
The human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) is the cause of human immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS). It is a virus that can be transmitted through blood or semen from an infected person to an uninfected person or from a mother to a child. child during pregnancy, childbirth or breastfeeding. HIV infection progresses silently through various phases: phase 1 (acute), phase 2 (chronic or asymptomatic), phase 3 (AIDS). Objectives: Determine the prevalence of patients with HIV infection who debut with AIDS marker diseases at the Hospital de Clínicas in the period between January 2021 and June 2023. Methodology: Cross-sectional descriptive observational study with non-probabilistic sampling at convenience, where clinical records of patients over 18 years of age with a diagnosis of HIV admitted to a medical clinic ward between January 2021 and June 2023 were reviewed. Results: A total of 35 patients were included, who had a mean age of 44.8±11.09 years and 21 (60%) were male. In 26 (74.29%) patients, a marker disease was found at the time of diagnosis, which in 6 (17.14%) of the cases was multiple. Discussion: The prevalence of the debut of HIV infection with AIDS marker diseases found is higher than that observed in other studies. This may be due to multiple factors that influence the late diagnosis of the disease.
