Resumen

GAMARRA, Olinda Maria et al. Profile and Level of Knowledge about Type II Diabetes Mellitus in patients hospitalized at the Social Security Institute in Ciudad del Este. An. Fac. Cienc. Méd. (Asunción) [online]. 2025, vol.58, n.2, pp.79-89. ISSN 1816-8949.  https://doi.org/10.18004/anales/2025.058.02.79.

Type II Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM) is a chronic and multifactorial condition that affects more than 400 million people worldwide. In Paraguay, 10% of the total population, approximately 700,000 individuals, suffer from diabetes, and 50% of patients are unaware of their condition.

Objective:

To determine the profile of hospitalized type II diabetic patients at the Medical Clinic of HR - IPS CDE and their level of knowledge about the disease during the period from August to September 2023.

Materials and Methods:

This is a descriptive, observational study with non-probabilistic and convenience sampling, involving adults over 18 years of age, of both sexes, diagnosed with Type II Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM) who were hospitalized at the Regional Hospital IPS - CDE during August-September 2023. The DKQ-24 questionnaire was applied, and data from the medical records of the studied patients were analyzed using Microsoft® Excel.

Results:

A total of 40 patients were analyzed, of which 55% were over 65 years old, with an even distribution between men and women. Complications of T2DM were the reason for hospitalization in 35% of the studied patients and 20% due to infections. 50% of the patients had a hemoglobin A1c greater than 8%. The majority of patients, represented by 57%, had a regular understanding of T2DM and its complications.

Conclusion:

The findings highlight the complexity of the disease, which requires integrated approaches among healthcare professionals, families, and patients to improve the quality of life for these individuals.
