Introduction:

The term TORCH corresponds to the initials of Toxoplasmosis, Rubella, Cytomegalovirus and Herpes. It is used to describe the characteristics of a fetus or newborn with any of these infections, as well as others such as Hepatitis B or Syphilis congenitally. These infections in pregnant women represent a risk for the fetus or the newborn.

Objective:

Determine the prevalence of TORCH infections in newborns from the Neonatology Service of a Regional Hospital in Paraguay during the years 2022 and 2023.

Materials and method:

A quantitative, observational, descriptive cross-sectional study was carried out, with non-probabilistic sampling of consecutive cases. The study variables are the following: Toxoplasmosis, Cytomegalovirus, Rubella, Hepatitis B and Syphilis.

Results:

The sample consisted of 229 patients. The prevalence of TORCH in newborns was 34% (77), with Toxoplasmosis reaching a higher proportion with 36% (28). Regarding the data of the sick children, 51% (39) were male, 71% (55) had a full-term gestational age and 77% (59) had an adequate birth weight. Regarding clinical manifestations, jaundice was observed in with 48% (37) of the cases.

Conclusion:

There is a high prevalence of TORCH in newborns with Toxoplasmosis being the prevalent infection. The most common clinical manifestation in these children was jaundice.

Palabras clave : TORCH; Toxoplasmosis; Syphilis; Cytomegalovirus; jaundice.
