Introduction:
Academic performance is an important factor in the development of new knowledge in any learning environment, so it is desirable to seek to implement and constantly improve methods that make it easier or more productive to internalize important information in our professional field.
Objective:
To relate music in general aspects with academic performance in university students in the health area and to analyze the results.
Methodology:
Analytical observational cross-sectional study in university students of the health area, a form was elaborated in the Google forms platform for the collection of the data in question. The variables were sociodemographic (age, sex, professional career, year of the career, department where the university is located and type of university), academic performance of the students, influence of music before an academic evaluation, influence of music in the student's life, classification of the preferred musical genre in the different academic activities, influence of music in study sessions, and the influence of music with academic performance.
Results:
It was determined that the causes that cause the most nervousness in students are exams (36.90%), not understanding an academic subject (34.61%) and for carrying out hospital internships (34.10%). 93.38% (366) of the students always listen to music frequently, 61.83% (157) to motivate themselves when performing academic activities, pop is the most listened to music genre. Of the 392 students we observed that among those who listen frequently 366 (93%) have higher grades (4 and 5) 190(52%) and medium to low grades (1-3) however no significant difference was found in the grades between the groups that listen to music to study and those who do not listen to it p=0.848.
Conclusion:
It is necessary to deepen the influence of music on academic performance with a qualitative approach to dimension other areas that may be related.
