Resumen

ACOSTA ZAYAS, María Carmen et al. Etiology of leukocytosis in patients hospitalized at the General Hospital of Luque, Paraguay, between January and September 2024. Mem. Inst. Investig. Cienc. Salud [online]. 2025, vol.23, n.1, e23122508.  Epub 30-Dic-2025. ISSN 1812-9528.  https://doi.org/10.18004/mem.iics/1812-9528/2025.e23122508.

This study, with a quantitative approach and cross-sectional observational analytical design, aimed to identify and analyze the main causes of leukocytosis in patients admitted to the Internal Medicine Department of the Luque General Hospital (Paraguay) between January and September 2024, considering predisposing factors and their impact on clinical diagnosis. A total of 1,296 adult patients with laboratory-confirmed leukocytosis were included, excluding those with chronic hematological diseases or undergoing immunosuppressive treatment. Data were collected through medical record review and analyzed statistically. The results showed that the most frequent causes of leukocytosis were respiratory infections (pneumonia), skin and soft tissue infections, chronic diseases such as chronic kidney disease (CKD), cerebrovascular accidents (CVA), and heart disease, with a high incidence observed in elderly patients and those with comorbidities. Furthermore, a significant increase in cases was identified during the months of August and September, possibly linked to seasonal factors. These findings underscore the need for clinical surveillance and prevention strategies focused on patients at higher risk.
