SEMPERTEGUI-MOSCOSO, Rodrigo y VAZQUEZ-HERRERA, Michelle. Facial asymmetry in a newborn: a case report. Pediatr. (Asunción) [online]. 2025, vol.52, n.3, pp.226-230. ISSN 1683-9803. https://doi.org/10.31698/ped.52032025010.
Introduction:
Asymmetrical facies during crying (AFC) is a mild congenital anomaly characterized by asymmetry in lip movement during crying in a newborn whose face remains symmetrical at rest. It may be related to hypoplasia of the depressor anguli oris muscle (DAOM) or peripheral paralysis.
Case Description:
We present the case of a newborn with asymmetrical facies during crying, without other evident structural abnormalities, with a favorable clinical course and no functional impairment.
Discussion:
This report highlights the importance of the neonatal physical examination and the need for a rational diagnostic approach that allows for the exclusion of syndromic associations, avoiding unnecessary studies in isolated cases.
