ORTELLADO VILLALBA, Omar Josué; GAUTO QUINONEZ, Macarena Sofia y MESQUITA RAMIREZ, Mirta Noemi. Quality of life and socioenvironmental factors in pediatric patients with chronic diseases at a referral hospital: a prospective, observational study. Pediatr. (Asunción) [online]. 2025, vol.52, n.3, pp.158-167. ISSN 1683-9803. https://doi.org/10.31698/ped.52032025003b.
Introduction:
The prevalence of chronic diseases in children varies according to geographic region, socioeconomic factors, and local healthcare systems.
Objective:
To determine quality of life using the Kiddy-KINDLR questionnaire and to identify associated socioenvironmental factors in pediatric patients with chronic diseases treated at a referral hospital during November-December 2024.
Materials and Methods:
This was a prospective, descriptive and observational study with an analytical component. Using non-probability convenience sampling, parents of pediatric patients diagnosed with a chronic disease who provided informed consent and completed the Kiddy-KINDLR questionnaire for parents were included. Parents of patients with severe neurological disorders, those receiving palliative care, and children with severe disabilities that hindered communication were excluded. Variables: demographic data of patients and their parents, educational level, marital status of parents or guardians, and socio-environmental factors. Data were processed using SPSS software. The protocol was approved by the institutional ethics committee.
Results:
101 patients were included, with a mean age of 9 years; 59% were male and 83% belonged to a low socioeconomic stratum. The most frequent diseases were rheumatological diseases, asthma, and genetic diseases. 54.5% of the patients presented with low quality of life, which was associated with inadequate housing (p=0.007), lower socioeconomic stratum (p=0.005), and lower parental educational level (p=0.01).
Conclusion:
More than half of the participants presented with low quality of life, which was related to socioenvironmental factors.
