Abstract

ECHEVERRIA ACOSTA, Luciana et al. Assessment of the risk of developing Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus through the Findrisc Test in Villa Mano Abierta, Central - Paraguay 2024. Med. clín. soc. [online]. 2025, vol.9, n.1, e574.  Epub Dec 08, 2025. ISSN 2521-2281.  https://doi.org/10.52379/mcs.v9.574.

Introduction:

FINDRISC is a simple and reliable tool to identify risk of type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM2).

Objective:

To assess the risk of DM2 in adults from the Mano Abierta Family Health Unit, Julián Augusto Saldívar district, Central Department, Paraguay, in 2024.

Methodology:

Cross-sectional, population-based study with systematic random sampling. Adults aged 18-64 years who gave informed consent were included; pregnant women and individuals with known diabetes were excluded. A structured questionnaire collected general data and FINDRISC items.

Results:

Of 396 participants (median age 40 years; 74.5% women), 15% showed high and 25% moderate risk. Significant factors were: female sex (OR 1.9; 95% CI 1.2-3.2), age 55-64 (p<0.0001), low education (OR 2.5; 95% CI 1.5-3.9), obesity (OR 23.5; 95% CI 9.6-56.9), sedentary lifestyle (OR 2.2; 95% CI 1.4-3.3), high waist circumference (p=0.0001), family history of DM2 (OR 5.6; 95% CI 3.6-8.8), antihypertensive treatment (OR 5.6; 95% CI 3.6-16.1) and high fasting glucose (OR 14.4; 95% CI 6.3-32.9). Fruit and vegetable intake was not associated.

Conclusion:

DM2 risk according to FINDRISC was high. Most test components were significantly associated, except fruit and vegetable consumption.
