Abstract
GROODERS GODOY, Everlize and PESCADOR RUSCHEL, Marco Antonio. A residue from the past with present repercussions: Urachal cyst in an adult woman with recurrent urinary tract infections. Rev. virtual Soc. Parag. Med. Int. [online]. 2026, vol.13, n.1, e13142620. Epub Apr 06, 2026. ISSN 2312-3893. https://doi.org/10.18004/rvspmi/2312-3893/2026.e13142620.
Urachal cysts are rare congenital anomalies that arise from the embryonic remnant of the urachus, a structure connecting the bladder to the umbilicus. Persistence of this remnant in adulthood can predispose to recurrent infections and, in severe cases, to rupture and even malignancy.
We present the case of a 32-year-old woman with a history of recurrent urinary tract infections, empirically treated without adequate response until an incidental diagnosis of a urachal cyst was made during a laparoscopic exploration for acute abdomen. Initial computed tomography and ultrasound imaging did not reveal conclusive findings. The final diagnosis was confirmed through histopathology, identifying the urachal cyst. Surgical intervention successfully resolved the symptoms, and the patient was discharged with follow-up care.
This case underscores the importance of considering urachal cysts in the differential diagnosis of recurrent urinary infections and highlights the role of surgical treatment in symptomatic diagnosed patients.
