RESUMEN With the objective of evaluating the effect of efficient microorganism applications on morphological and yield variables in tomato cultivation, an experiment was conducted at the "Las Flores" farm, Cruces municipality, Cienfuegos province (Cuba), on a Brown soil without Carbonate. The commercial tomato variety "Lignon" was used, and a randomized block experimental design was applied with three treatments and four replications, covering a total area of 278 m². The efficient microorganism biopreparation was applied on three occasions every seven days, at doses of 7 L ha⁻¹ and 10 L ha⁻¹. Ten plants per plot were evaluated and the economic feasibility of each treatment was calculated. The results demonstrated that the application of efficient microorganisms promoted soil microbial activity and improved its biochemical capacity, resulting in greater vegetative development, a significant increase in flowering and fruiting, as well as a notable improvement in agricultural yield compared to the control. The economic analysis confirmed that the 10 L ha⁻¹ dose was the most profitable. The use of this biopreparation not only increases crop productivity but also contributes to the regeneration and enrichment of degraded soils, representing a sustainable and economically viable alternative for agricultural systems with fertility limitations.
ABSTRACT The Wax Flower (Hoya carnosa) is a hardy plant suitable for both outdoor and indoor environments. Likewise, it is a profitable option for growers who commercialize this species. However, its propagation can be compromised by unsuitable substrates for rooting. The objective of this experiment was to identify the most appropriate substrate for rooting H. carnosa cuttings. The study was conducted in a nursery located in Cabañas Caacupé from September to November 2022. The experimental design used was a randomized complete block design with 8 treatments and 4 replications. The treatments consisted of the following rooting substrates: washed sand, coarse sand, leaf mold + coarse sand, vermicompost, rice husk, phenolic foam, commercial substrate, and sphagnum moss. The variables evaluated were rooting percentage, length of the longest root, number of roots, fresh mass of rooted cuttings, and establishment percentage. An analysis of variance (ANOVA) was performed, along with a comparison of means using Tukey’s test at a 5% probability level. Significant differences were found in the variables of longest root length and number of roots. However, no significant differences were observed for rooting percentage, fresh mass of rooted cuttings, or establishment percentage. Aerated organic substrates such as vermicompost, leaf mold + coarse sand, and coarse sand promoted the formation of vigorous roots, indicating that substrate quality has a greater influence on root development than on the overall rooting percentage.
ABSTRACT Adequate micronutrient availability is essential for agricultural crop development, as micronutrients are essential for plant growth, chlorophyll formation, and the optimization of nitrogen use. The objective of this study was to determine the influence of soil use and depth on the levels of iron (Fe), manganese (Mn), copper (Cu), and zinc (Zn) in an Oxisol, and to analyze the relationship of these micronutrients with pH and organic matter (OM). Statistical analysis was performed using Friedman's non-parametric test. Treatments consisted of four soil uses (Forest, Pasture, Conventional agriculture, Conservation agriculture) and six depths (0-5, 5-15, 15-30, 30-60, 60-100, and 100-150 cm, respectively). The agricultural system recorded the lowest levels of Mn (43.4 mg kg⁻¹), Cu (14.2 mg kg⁻¹), and Zn (2.2 mg kg⁻¹); in contrast, the influence of manure in pasture soil favored the highest micronutrient concentrations, with values of Fe: 47.9 mg kg⁻¹, Mn: 47.5 mg kg⁻¹, Cu: 26.9 mg kg⁻¹, and Zn: 4.5 mg kg⁻¹. Across all four soil uses, the highest Cu levels were recorded in the 15 to 60 cm layer. In the surface layer (0-5 cm), the highest OM concentration stood out in forest and pasture (6.7% and 4.9%). Statistical analysis shows that forest soil had a pH of 5.3, more acidic than the other soil uses. No significant correlation was observed between the evaluated micronutrients and the soil pH and organic matter variables. Effect of fertilizer doses and sources on the yield and profitability of the cassava cultivar INIAP P-652 "La Rendidora" http://scielo.iics.una.py/scielo.php?script=sci_arttext&pid=S2305-06832026000100208&lng=en&nrm=iso&tlng=en RESUMEN La fertilización es fundamental para una eficiente formación de raíces y alto rendimiento en yuca.
ABSTRACT Fertilization is fundamental for efficient root formation and high yield in cassava. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of fertilizer doses and sources on the yield and profitability of the cassava cultivar INIAP P-652 "La Rendidora" in Ecuador. Factorial treatments of two fertilizer sources (chemically blended compound fertilizer - CBCF and bulk physically blended fertilizer - BPBF) and three fertilization doses (200, 400, and 600 kg ha⁻¹), plus a control treatment, were evaluated using a randomized complete block design in an A × B + N arrangement. The main variables recorded were root yield (RY), agronomic efficiency of fertilization (AEF), and economic profitability (EP). The results showed that RY was significantly affected (p < 0.05) by the fertilization treatments compared with the control. The CBCF produced the highest RY, with an average increase of 11.22 and 42.95% over the BPBF and the control treatment, respectively. No significant differences (p > 0.05) were detected among doses for RY; therefore, 200 kg ha⁻¹ may be the most convenient dose. The AEF was significantly higher (p < 0.05) with CBCF than with BPBF. The 200 kg ha⁻¹ dose achieved an AEF significantly higher (p < 0.05) than the 400 and 600 kg ha⁻¹ doses. Finally, fertilization with CBCF at a dose of 200 kg ha⁻¹ was the most economically viable alternative, with an average EP of 1.41 dollars per dollar invested and an average net economic benefit of 2,651.5 USD ha⁻¹. Efficacy of Pre-Emergent Herbicides Alone and in Combination for Weed Control in Cassava http://scielo.iics.una.py/scielo.php?script=sci_arttext&pid=S2305-06832026000100209&lng=en&nrm=iso&tlng=en RESUMEN La mandioca es esencial para la seguridad alimentaria y la industria almidonera en Paraguay. Weed control was evaluated at 21 days using a visual percentage scale (ALAM, 1974). Data were analyzed by ANOVA and Tukey's test (p ≤ 0.05). The Clomazone + Sulfentrazone (99.53%), Flumioxazin + Pyroxasulfone (99.1%), and Metolachlor + Flumioxazin (98.43%) mixtures exceeded 98% control, classified as optimal according to the scale used, with no significant differences among them. Flumioxazin alone and Pyroxasulfone alone achieved "very good" control (89.33% and 88.67%), while Metolachlor alone achieved "good" control (78.33%). It is concluded that mixtures with different mechanisms of action outperform individual herbicides, with combinations including Flumioxazin and Clomazone standing out for their efficacy exceeding 98%.
ABSTRACT This article describes the Participatory Action Research (PAR) process developed to carry out a collaborative market study between members of a Rural Production Society (RPS) in Maravatío, Michoacán, Mexico, and an academic team, with the aim of identifying marketing channels and points of sale ahead of the launch of a micro-enterprise for the production and sale of artisanal dairy products. As part of the PAR, the study was driven by the RPS members themselves, who formed a core working group of five participants to carry out the research. The procedure followed the participatory market survey methodology, incorporating throughout the dialogue of knowledge, experiences, and expertise of the group members. As results, 16 sales locations for the products were identified; the busiest locations corresponded to urban areas, notably the municipal seat of Maravatío, Ciudad Hidalgo, and Mexico City (CDMX). Based on the information obtained, two markets with price-premium potential were detected: Mexico City and the United States (USA), with margins of between 10% and 100% above the local price. Ranchero cheese was identified as the main product marketed, with high preference among consumers willing to pay a premium. It is concluded that PAR enabled the collective to develop a greater sense of ownership over their process, the knowledge generated, and the responsibility to implement actions that benefit their enterprise, by having timely information to guide their production and marketing of traditional dairy products.
