Objetivos:  Investigar el impacto de la infección por el virus Chikungunya en la actividad del Síndrome de Sjögren (SS), evaluada mediante el ESSDAI (Índice de Actividad de la Enfermedad del Síndrome de Sjögren de la EULAR) e identificar el dominio del ESSDAI más afectado por la infección viral.  Materiales y métodos:  Estudio observacional, retrospectivo de corte transversal, que incluyó pacientes con Enfermedad de Sjögren primario (según criterios ACR/EULAR 2016) en mayores de 18 años, quienes contrajeron la infección por el virus Chikungunya durante el periodo de enero 2023 a enero 2025. Se registraron las puntuaciones del ESSDAI antes y después de la infección.  Resultados:  Se incluyeron 34 pacientes con SS primario. De estos, 31 (91,2%) eran de género femenino y 3 (8,8%) masculino. Once de estos pacientes (32,4%) de la cohorte total se infectaron con Chikungunya. La edad promedio al momento del diagnóstico de infección por Chikungunya fue de 48,78 ± 14,76 años. Los resultados del análisis no paramétrico revelaron un aumento estadísticamente significativo en la actividad de la enfermedad después de la infección por Chikungunya, tanto en la puntuación total del ESSDAI como en los dominios glandular, articular y constitucional.  Conclusión:  Los resultados demuestran que la infección por Chikungunya se asocia con un aumento significativo en la actividad de la enfermedad en pacientes con Enfermedad de Sjögren en la puntuación total del ESSDAI y en los dominios glandular, articular y constitucional.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="en"><p><![CDATA[ABSTRACT  Introduction:  The Chikungunya virus is an alphavirus transmitted by infected mosquitoes of the Aedes genus, causing fever, joint inflammation, and systemic symptoms.  Objectives:  To investigate the impact of Chikungunya virus infection on Sjögren's syndrome activity assessed using the ESSDAI (EULAR Sjögren's Syndrome Disease Activity Index) and to identify the ESSDAI domain most affected by viral infection.  Materials and methods:  This was an observational, retrospective, cross-sectional study that included patients with primary Sjögren's disease (according to ACR/EULAR 2016 criteria) aged 18 years and older who contracted Chikungunya virus infection between January 2023 and January 2025. ESSDAI scores were recorded before and after infection.  Results:  Thirty-four patients with primary Sjögren's disease were included. Of these, 31 (91.2%) were female and 3 (8.8%) were male. Eleven of these patients (32.4% of the total cohort) were infected with Chikungunya. The mean age at diagnosis of Chikungunya infection was 48.78 ± 14.76 years. The results of the nonparametric analysis revealed a statistically significant increase in disease activity after Chikungunya infection, both in the ESSDAI total score and in the glandular, articular, and constitutional domains.  Conclusion:  The results demonstrate that Chikungunya infection is associated with a significant increase in disease activity in patients with Sjögren's disease in the ESSDAI total score and in the glandular, articular, and constitutional domains.]]></p></abstract>
