El dolor muscular tardío (DOMS) es un dolor estructural que aparece frecuentemente 24 a 48 horas después de ejercicios inusuales o de alta intensidad. En las personas mayores, el DOMS puede ser más limitante debido a los cambios fisiológicos propios del envejecimiento, como la disminución de la elasticidad y la masa muscular. Aunque la masoterapia y los estiramientos estáticos se proponen como tratamientos, su impacto específico en la disminución del DOMS en esta población no está bien documentado.  Objetivo:  comparar la eficacia de la masoterapia de relajación y los estiramientos estáticos en la disminución de la aparición de los síntomas del dolor muscular tardío (DOMS) en personas mayores de 60 años después de un programa de intervención física.  Metodología:  se realizó un estudio cuasi experimental, aleatorizado y de ciego simple. La muestra consistió en 30 personas mayores de 60 años (6 varones, 24 damas), divididas aleatoriamente en dos grupos de 15 participantes cada uno: un grupo de masoterapia y un grupo de estiramientos estáticos. Todos los participantes realizaron una intervención de fuerza de 60 minutos con bandas elásticas para inducir el DOMS en el músculo trapecio. Se evaluaron la intensidad del dolor (Escala Numérica Análoga - ENA), el umbral de dolor a la presión (Algómetro) y la funcionalidad (Escala Funcional del Dolor - EFD). Debido a que los datos no siguieron una distribución normal, se utilizaron las pruebas no paramétricas de Friedman y Durbin-Conover para las comparaciones.  Resultados:  ambos grupos mostraron una reducción en las medias de ENA y EFD, sugiriendo una mejora general. El análisis de Friedman mostró diferencias significativas globales (p &lt; .001). Las comparaciones post hoc (Durbin-Conover) revelaron que existió una diferencia estadísticamente significativa entre los grupos en la ENA final (p = 0.002), favoreciendo a la masoterapia. Sin embargo, no se encontraron diferencias significativas entre los grupos para la EFD final (p = 0.615) ni para el Dolorímetro final (p = 0.900).  Discusiones:  los resultados sugieren que ambas intervenciones impactaron positivamente en la reducción del DOMS, lo cual es coherente con estudios previos. El análisis post hoc indicó que la masoterapia tuvo un impacto más consistente en la reducción del dolor percibido (ENA). La falta de diferencias significativas en las medidas funcionales (EFD) entre los grupos sugiere que ambas intervenciones pueden tener efectos similares en esa variable específica.  Conclusiones:  el estudio demostró que tanto los estiramientos estáticos como la masoterapia de relajación son estrategias efectivas para reducir el DOMS en adultos mayores. Sin embargo, los resultados indican que la masoterapia tiene un impacto más consistente en la reducción de la percepción del dolor y la mejora de la funcionalidad muscular, sugiriendo que podría ser la intervención preferida para una recuperación rápida.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="en"><p><![CDATA[ABSTRACT  Introduction: globally, the population is aging; it is expected that by 2030, one in six people will be over 60 years old delayed onset muscle soreness (DOMS) is a structural pain that frequently appears 24 to 48 hours after unusual or high-intensity exercise. In older adults, DOMS can be more debilitating due to age-related physiological changes, such as decreased muscle elasticity and mass. Although massage therapy and static stretching are proposed as treatments, their specific impact on reducing DOMS in this population is not well documented.  Objective: to compare the effectiveness of relaxation massage therapy and static stretching in reducing the occurrence of delayed onset muscle soreness (DOMS) symptoms in people over 60 years of age after a physical intervention program.  Methodology: we conducteda quasi-experimental, randomized, single-blind study. The sample consisted of 30 individuals over 60 years of age (6 men, 24 women), randomly divided into two groups of 15 participants each: a massage therapy group and a static stretching group. All participants performed a 60-minute resistance training intervention using elastic bands to induce delayed onset muscle soreness (DOMS) in the trapezius muscle. Pain intensity (Numerical Analog Scale - NAS), pressure pain threshold (Algometer), and functional status (Functional Pain Scale - FPS) were assessed. Because the data did not follow a normal distribution, the non-parametric Friedman and Durbin-Conover tests were used for comparisons.  Results: both groups showed a reduction in mean NAS and FPS scores, suggesting an overall improvement. The Friedman test showed significant overall differences (p &lt; .001). Post-hoc comparisons (Durbin-Conover) revealed a statistically significant difference between the groups in the final NAS (p = 0.002), favoring massage therapy. However, no significant differences were found between the groups for the final EFD (p = 0.615) or the final Dolorimeter (p = 0.900).  Discussion: the results suggest that both interventions had a positive impact on reducing DOMS, which is consistent with previous studies. The post-hoc analysis indicated that massage therapy had a more consistent impact on reducing perceived pain (NAS). The lack of significant differences in functional measures (EFD) between the groups suggests that both interventions may have similar effects on this specific variable.  Conclusions: the study demonstrated that both static stretching and relaxation massage therapy are effective strategies for reducing DOMS in older adults. However, the results indicate that massage therapy has a more consistent impact on reducing pain perception and improving muscle function, suggesting that it could be the preferred intervention for a faster recovery.]]></p></abstract>
