</abstract>

However, reliance on state funding and low private sector participation remain structural challenges. In this context, Multidisciplinary Digital Publishing Institute (MDPI) has emerged as a key player in the dissemination of regional research, offering open access to articles through an author-funded model. This study analyzes the evolution of MDPI publications in Latin America and the Caribbean, identifying key trends and characteristics. It examines the impact of factors such as reduced publication times, special issues, and incentive systems for editors and reviewers on the proliferation of articles. Additionally, criticisms regarding the rigor of the peer review process and MDPI’s impact on scientific quality are discussed. The findings provide insight into the role of this publisher within the regional academic ecosystem and its implications for scientific development.
</abstract>
