Al tener la AI una función de mantenimiento del gasto cardiaco, y al presentar cambios funcionales y estructurales precoces ocupa un papel importante con el fin de mantener la funcionalidad sistólica del ventrículo izquierdo (VI).  Objetivo Determinar los signos tempranos de disfunción de la aurícula izquierda por strain longitudinal pico en pacientes con hipertensión arterial sistémica.  Materiales y Métodos Estudio descriptivo con componente analítico, observacional, de corte trasversal.  Resultados Se incluyeron 100 pacientes con hipertensión arterial y fracción de eyección del VI conservada con una edad promedio de 58±13 años, 55% de sexo femenino. Los factores de riesgo adicionales que presentaron los pacientes fueron la dislipidemia (80%), y en segundo lugar sobrepeso y obesidad (59%). Se observó que los pacientes con disfunción diastólica (74%) presentaron disminución significativa del strain longitudinal pico de la AI (p &lt;0,0001).  Conclusión El Strain longitudinal pico auricular constituye una herramienta útil para la valoración precoz de disfunción de la aurícula izquierda, y posee una relación significativa directa con la disfunción diastólica del VI en pacientes con hipertensión arterial sistémica con fracción de eyección conservada del ventrículo izquierdo.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="en"><p><![CDATA[ABSTRACT  Introduction Given the advances in echocardiographic techniques that allow a more comprehensive assessment of cardiac function, particularly diastolic function, the current importance of the left atrium (LA) deserves special emphasis. Since the LA plays a key role in maintaining cardiac output and undergoes early functional and structural changes, it occupies a critical position in preserving the systolic functionality of the left ventricle (LV).  Objective To determine the early signs of left atrial dysfunction by peak longitudinal strain in patients with systemic arterial hypertension.  Materials and Methods Descriptive study with an analytical component, observational, cross-sectional design.  Results One hundred patients with arterial hypertension and preserved LV ejection fraction were included, with a mean age of 58±13 years, 55% female. The most prevalent additional risk factors were dyslipidemia (80%), followed by overweight and obesity (59%). Patients with diastolic dysfunction (74%) showed a significant reduction in peak longitudinal strain of the LA (p &lt;0.0001).  Conclusion Peak atrial longitudinal strain is a useful tool for the early assessment of left atrial dysfunction and has a significant direct relationship with LV diastolic dysfunction in patients with systemic arterial hypertension and preserved left ventricular ejection fraction.]]></p></abstract>
