Este reporte de caso busca mostrar la relación entre las infecciones cervicofaciales y las enfermedades sistémicas. Presentamos el caso de una paciente de 70 años de edad que fue ingresada al Hospital Dr. Adolfo Prince Lara de Puerto Cabello-Venezuela bajo el diagnóstico de Angina de Ludwig, la cual se drenó en quirófano y se trasladó posteriormente a la unidad de cuidados intensivos. La paciente fue diagnosticada intrahospitalariamente de diabetes mellitus entre otras enfermedades sistémicas por lo que su evolución fue desfavorable y se mantuvo en la unidad de cuidados intensivos, área en la cual falleció por complicaciones como mediastinitis y tromboembolismo pulmonar. Pudimos evidenciar por lo tanto la alta complejidad del manejo de las infecciones odontogénicas en pacientes con patologías sistémicas debido al avance del cuadro infeccioso con mayor rapidez y severidad que en pacientes sanos.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="en"><p><![CDATA[ABSTRACT Odontogenic infections represent a reason for hospital admission in maxillofacial surgery, with a low mortality rate. However, some systemic pathologies increase the risk of infectious process exacerbation turning them into an emergency. This case report tries to show the relationship between cervicofacial infections and systemic diseases. We present a case of a 70-year-old patient admitted to the Hospital Dr. Adolfo Prince Lara Puerto Cabello- Venezuela with a diagnosis of Ludwig's Angina, which was drained in the operating room and transferred to the ICU. The patient was diagnosed in hospital with diabetes mellitus among other systemic diseases, so her evolution was unfavorable and she remained in the ICU and died of complications such as mediastinitis and pulmonary thromboembolism. We have shown the high complexity of the management of odontogenic infections in patients with systemic pathologies due to the faster and more severe progression of the infectious picture than in healthy patients.]]></p></abstract>
