Objetivos:  describir las características de los pacientes con infarto agudo de miocardio del Hospital Nacional, Itauguá, Paraguay, en el periodo 2020-2021.  Métodos:  se realizó un estudio observacional, descriptivo y con componente analítico. Se incluyó a varones y mujeres, mayores de edad, portadores de infarto agudo de miocardio. La investigación fue aprobada por el Comité de Ética de la Universidad Nacional de Itapúa.  Resultados:  la muestra estuvo compuesta de 110 pacientes, con edad media 64 años, 68,2% era del sexo masculino, 83,6% de zonas urbanas y 61,8% con nivel educativo primario. El 92,7% presentó alguna comorbilidad, las más frecuente fue la hipertensión arterial. El 22,7% tuvo evento cardiovascular previo. En 63,6% el infarto fue sin elevación del ST. Se utilizó fibrinolíticos en 12 de 40 pacientes con infarto agudo de miocardio con elevación del ST. Se realizó cinecoronariografía en 45,5%. La mortalidad fue 20% y se asoció a edad avanzada, anemia, fracción de eyección baja, clasificación Killip Kimball tipo III y IV y la presencia de diabetes mellitus (p &lt;0,05). No se asoció a la mortalidad la presencia de obesidad, tabaquismo, hipertensión arterial, tipo de infarto y horas de evolución antes de la consulta (p &gt;0,05).  Conclusión:  predominó el infarto agudo de miocardio sin elevación del ST. La mortalidad global fue 20% y sus factores predictores fueron la diabetes mellitus, Killip Kimball al ingreso tipo III y IV, fracción de eyección &#8804;40%, hemoglobina &#8804;10,1 g/dL y la edad avanzada.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="en"><p><![CDATA[ABSTRACT  Introduction: The risk of developing an acute myocardial infarction is related to the presence of cardiovascular risk factors that have a cumulative effect, many of which are preventable.  Objectives: To describe the characteristics of patients with acute myocardial infarction at the Hospital Nacional of Itauguá, Paraguay, in the period 2020-2021.  Methods: An observational, descriptive study with an analytical component was carried out. Men and women, of legal age, with acute myocardial infarction were included. The research was approved by the Ethics Committee of the National University of Itapúa.  Results: The sample consisted of 110 patients, with a mean age of 64 years, 68.2% were male, 83.6% came from urban areas and 61.8% had a primary education level. Comorbidity was present in 92.7%, the most frequent being arterial hypertension. A previous cardiovascular event was observed in 22.7% and 63.6% had non-ST-elevation infarction. Fibrinolytic therapy was used in 12 of 40 patients with ST elevation myocardial infarction. Coronary angiography was performed in 45.5%. Mortality was 20% and was associated with advanced age, anemia, low ejection fraction, Killip Kimball class III and IV, and presence of diabetes mellitus (p&lt;0.05). The presence of obesity, smoking, arterial hypertension, type of infarction and hours of evolution before consultation were not associated with mortality (p&gt;0.05).  Conclusion: Non-ST-elevation acute myocardial infarction predominated. Overall mortality was 20% and its predictive factors were diabetes mellitus, Killip Kimball class III and IV at admission, ejection fraction &#8804;40%, hemoglobin &#8804;10.1 g/dL, and advanced age.]]></p></abstract>
