Puede presentarse tanto en pacientes diabéticos como no diabéticos.  Objetivos: determinar la incidencia de hiperglicemia inducida por corticoides, así como las indicaciones y los tipos de corticoides utilizados en pacientes con hiperglicemia inducida por estos fármacos en pacientes que acuden en forma ambulatoria a los consultorios de Clínica Médica del Hospital Nacional de Itauguá.  Material y métodos:  estudio observacional, descriptivo, longitudinal, prospectivo realizado en varones y mujeres, mayores de 18 años, que reciben corticoterapia enteral o parenteral, que acuden en forma ambulatoria a los consultorios de Clínica Médica del Hospital Nacional en 2017.  Resultados: la edad media de los pacientes estudiados fue 51 ± 16 años. Predominaron pacientes del sexo femenino (56,7%). Presentaban hiperglicemia el 35% de los pacientes. El 26% presentaba cifras de HbA1C &#8805; 6,5%. Solo 14% eran conocidos diabéticos. Las patologías que con mayor frecuencia requirieron corticoterapia fueron las autoinmunes, entre las que destacan el lupus eritematoso sistémico y la artritis reumatoide. La prednisona fue el glucocorticoide utilizado con mayor frecuencia. Ningún paciente presentó descompensación aguda como cetoacidosis o estado hiperosmolar.  Conclusión: La incidencia de hiperglicemia inducida por corticoterapia fue 35%, en pacientes diabéticos como en no diabéticos. La indicación más frecuente del uso de corticoides fueron las enfermedades autoinmunes. El corticoide más frecuentemente utilizado fue la prednisona.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="en"><p><![CDATA[ABSTRACT  Introduction:  Corticosteroid-induced hyperglycemia is a well-known adverse effect of glucocorticoid (GC) treatment. It can occur in both diabetic and non-diabetic patients.  Objectives: To determine the incidence of corticosteroid-induced hyperglycemia, as well as the indications and types of corticosteroids used in patients with hyperglycemia induced by these drugs in patients who attend the outpatient clinical services of the Hospital Nacional de Itauguá.  Material and methods: Observational, descriptive, longitudinal, prospective study carried out in men and women, older than 18 years old, who received enteral or parenteral corticotherapy and attended the outpatient clinical services of the Hospital Nacional in 2017.  Results:  The mean age of the patients studied was 51±16 years and female patients predominated (56.7%). While 35% of patients presented hyperglycemia, 26% had HbA1C levels &#8805;6.5%. Only 14% were known diabetics. The autoimmune pathologies that most frequently required corticotherapy were systemic lupus erythematosus and rheumatoid arthritis. Prednisone was the glucocorticoid used most frequently. No patient presented acute decompensation such as ketoacidosis or hyperosmolar state.  Conclusion:  The incidence of hyperglycemia induced by corticosteroid therapy was 35% in diabetic and non-diabetic patients. The most frequent indication for the use of corticosteroids was autoimmune diseases and the most frequently used corticosteroid was prednisone.]]></p></abstract>
