Objetivo:  Determinar la frecuencia de dolor orofacial en una población paraguaya, midiendo la presencia o ausencia de dolor en regiones de dientes, boca y lengua, cara y mejilla, articulación temporomandibular y zona anterior de la oreja.  Materiales y Métodos:  Se realizó un estudio piloto de tipo observacional descriptivo de corte transverso, en una población de 35 años o más, provenientes del área metropolitana de Asunción en el año 2018. La muestra estuvo compuesta por 189 encuestados que fueron seleccionados a través de un muestreo no probabilístico por conveniencia y los datos fueron recolectados mediante un cuestionario auto-administrado. Fueron observadas sus características demográficas, prevalencia y localización del dolor y otros factores asociados.  Resultados:  La frecuencia de dolor orofacial fue de 40,2 %, siendo los dolores más frecuentes, el dolor al masticar o morder seguido del dolor en la articulación de la mandíbula o delante del oído y el ardor en la lengua o alguna parte de la boca.  Conclusión:  El estudio reveló una alta frecuencia de dolor orofacial, siendo los dolores de tipo dentoalveolar los más frecuentes.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="en"><p><![CDATA[ABSTRACT  Introduction:  The management of orofacial pain is relevant, due to its impact on the quality of life of those who suffer it. It usually has its origin in endoperiodontic lesions; however other causes must be considered to establish an accurate diagnosis and an effective treatment.  Objective:  To determine the frequency of orofacial pain, were measured the presence or absence of pain in regions of teeth, mouth and tongue, face and cheek, temporomandibular joint and anterior area of the ear.  Materials and Methods:  A descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted in a population of 35 years and older, in Asunción and the metropolitan area in 2018. The sample consisted in 189 participants who were selected through a convenience non-probabilistic sampling; the data were collected using a self-administered questionnaire. They were evaluated according to their demographic characteristics, prevalence and location of pain and other associated factors.  Results:  The frequency of orofacial pain was 40.2 %, with the most common types being chewing or biting pain followed by pain caused by blisters, sores or ulcers on the lips or mouth.  Conclusion:  The study revealed a high frequency of orofacial pain, with dentoalveolar pain being most frequent.]]></p></abstract>
