<self-uri xlink:href="http://scielo.iics.una.py/scielo.php?script=sci_arttext&amp;pid=S2076-054X2017004500095&amp;lng=en&amp;nrm=iso"></self-uri><self-uri xlink:href="http://scielo.iics.una.py/scielo.php?script=sci_abstract&amp;pid=S2076-054X2017004500095&amp;lng=en&amp;nrm=iso"></self-uri><self-uri xlink:href="http://scielo.iics.una.py/scielo.php?script=sci_pdf&amp;pid=S2076-054X2017004500095&amp;lng=en&amp;nrm=iso"></self-uri><abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="es"><p><![CDATA[RESUMEN Pareciera que la producción ganadera y la conservación de bosques son antagonistas, sin embargo, el presente estudio de caso en la región del Chaco Húmedo resalta los beneficios proveídos por los bosques y humedales asociados con actividades ganaderas semi-intensivas, permitiendo la conservación del ecosistema nativo dominado por pastizales naturales y una producción económicamente viable al mismo tiempo. Se presenta un balance financiero de un establecimiento ganadero en fase inicial, así como proyecciones futuras. Posteriormente, se reportan diferentes servicios ambientales medidos en el mismo sitio, utilizando un enfoque de servicios ecosistémicos, mostrándose que la provisión de estos servicios ambientales y la ganadería económicamente viable podrían ser posibles sin deforestación, medida habitualmente utilizada para la intensificación productiva en la región. El estudio confronta la idea de que es necesaria la deforestación de bosques para la plantación de pasturas a través del balance financiero y la enumeración de los beneficios económicos directos para la producción ganadera, derivados de manejar y conservar estos bosques y ecosistemas nativos. Durante los cuatro años de estudio, se evaluaron servicios ecosistémicos, manteniéndose simultáneamente un registro del balance financiero y las inversiones, lo que permitió una discusión &#8220;en el terreno&#8221; de la conexión entre productividad y conservación y restauración de ecosistemas nativos. Se enfatizan los desafíos para los sistemas productivos, derivados mayormente de las presiones del mercado, y se exploran soluciones que aseguren incentivos eficientes para preservar los bosques y ecosistemas nativos, en el marco de sistemas productivos más intensivos que posibiliten un flujo de caja positivo para el productor.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="en"><p><![CDATA[ABSTRACT It seems as if cattle production and conservation of forests landscapes are antagonists, however, this case study in the humid Chaco highlights benefits provided by forests and wetlands associated with semi intensive cattle ranching activities in native grasslands, allowing native ecosystems conservation and economic-viable production at the same time. A financial balance is presented for a cattle establishment in an initial phase, as well as future projections. Afterwards, different environmental services are reported in the same site, using an ecosystem services approach, showing that the provision of this environmental services and economically viable cattle ranching could be possible without deforestation, which is a frequent pathway to productive intensification in the region. The idea that forests are needed to be cleared for plantation of grasses is confronted by a financial balance and listing direct economic benefits to livestock production derived from managing and conserving these forests. During the four year study, ecosystem services are assessed, while also simultaneously keeping a record of financial balance and investments that allows for an on-the-ground discussion of the offset between productivity, conservation and restoration of native ecosystems. Challenges to productive systems, mostly derived from market pressures are emphasized. Solutions are explored that ensure efficient incentives to preserve forests in the face of more intensive production systems that promise a positive cash flow for the producer.]]></p></abstract>
