Almost four decades after the creation of the Faculty of Medical Sciences, FCM, the journal ANALES appeared as a scientific organ, in August 1927. It emerged intending to document the progress of academic and scientific production. An important effort was emphasized in the organization of research resources as well as support for the evolution of laboratories and technical-clinical services. At that time, the Faculty incorporated French professors and, in collaboration with various organizations, strove to expand its research and improve its clinical services. The Editorial Board of the journal called for the participation of national and foreign colleagues to publish and contribute to the advancement of medicine and health in Paraguay ¹.

Since its creation, the journal ANALES of the Faculty of Medical Sciences of the National University - UNA has been characterized by the seriousness of the scientific information published and provides its readers with quality materials produced by prestigious authors of Paraguayan medicine, in different branches, and the contributions of foreign authors. On the other hand, it is important to mention that events in national history such as partisan political struggles, interventions to the UNA, and the Chaco War against Bolivia caused relatively long interruptions in the appearance of its publications, under these circumstances.

Prof. Dr. Víctor Idoyaga was the Director of the first edition, Editorial Secretary Prof. Dr. Mario Luis De Finis and the authors who wrote in it, Professors J. Delamare, Silvio Lofruscio, L. Zanotti Cavazzoni, and Luis Gery. The issues were published until 1931, when they were interrupted by the war conflict of the Chaco War and members of various groups of the FCM participated as doctors, medical students, or combatants.

It reappears in 1938, without mentioning the past war, the summary contains the internal regulations and the study plan approved in 1930 by the Minister of Justice, Worship and Public Instruction, in this document reference is made to the journal "Anales of the Faculty of Medical Sciences, an official publication directed by the Dean and that will publish original research works and doctoral theses. This publication does not have a defined periodicity, but three to four issues must be published per year" ².

In 1949, the magazine reappeared after a long hiatus due to political and administrative difficulties at the National University caused by the Civil War of 1947. It was directed by Dean Carlos Álvarez and had the purpose of disseminating and stimulating scientific research, in addition to serve university ideals ³. In 1981, the editorial "As we said yesterday" announced the publication of a new volume of the journal "Anales de la Faculty of Medical Sciences" after a lapse of 25 years. This interruption was caused by government intervention at the University in 1954. This volume included summaries of doctoral theses and monographs, as well as an article on the history of medicine at the Hospital de Clínicas. In the editorial of that issue, the need to improve the methodology and writing of scientific works is recognized. On the other hand, it expresses the hope that ANALES will be a form of progress and improvement for the Faculty ⁴.

Since volume XIII in 1981, the periodicity of the magazine has not had any interruptions. Currently, it is in volume LVI. In 2006 it was indexed to SciELO - Scientific Electronic Library Online ⁵, a model for the electronic publication and distribution of scientific journals that promotes the diffusion of scientific publications in the Ibero-American area. Today, ANALES has the medium and long-term objective of entering PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science. In this year, 2023, the old copies from 1927 to 1940 were restored and digitized, contributing to the safeguarding of this historical collection in the Faculty Library.

ANALES of the Faculty of Medical Sciences has as its mission the publication of scientific works in the area of Medical Sciences carried out by Professors, Teaching Assistants, and students of the careers offered by the Faculty of Medical Sciences of the National University of Asunción; Medicine and Surgery, Instrumentation and Surgical Area, Kinesiology and Physiotherapy and Nursing.
