University teaching, research and continuous education

Prof. Dr. Castor Samaniego Ayala

The Academic Direction of the Faculty of Medical Sciences - National University of Asunción (FCM - UNA), giving a current priority to the recommendations of the ANEAES (National Agency for Assessment and Accreditation of Higher Education), intends to carry the implementation of an integrated research trough and create a space for reflection and continuous teacher training for lecturers and teaching assistants. Continuous improvement in terms of teaching applied to university education is an unavoidable requirement if we want to respond effectively, efficiently and effectively to the challenges posed by the new paradigms of the higher education.
The commitments made by the FCM - UNA, facing the Accreditation of Degree of Medicine and Surgery consider, in fact, several aspects that require the joint efforts of all sectors. The turning points of the agreements at the time of Accreditation - almost conditioned to a list of promises - include: career of 6 years duration with undergraduate Internship (hereinafter "supervised practice), semi-annual development of the materials, objectives and competency assessment, integration of the activities of core subjects with the clinic, research development during the career and teacher training programs.
With regard to research, it is urgent to carry out the task of incorporating some manifestation of a gradual shift towards the adoption of the model RESEARCH BASED UNIVERSITY AND THE PRODUCTION OF NEW KNOWLEDGE. We have to entrust on the people responsible of CINSA "Prof. Dr. Arquímedes Canese" with the task of developing a planning with projects covering subjects additional to the ones developed at the Chair of Microbiology and Parasitology ".
At the point mentioned at the end of the list, a project to conduct a WORKSHOP OF CRITERIA BASED EVALUATION has been prepared and submitted to the Directive Board. The project aim at those responsible for the 40 Chairs inserted into the current curriculum and a CONTINUOUS EDUCATION PROGRAM of 4 years with the opportunity of updating for more than 250 members of the faculty.
The objectives set by the heads of the academic tasks go beyond the "requirements" of the ANEAES: it is also necessary to adapt to globalization trends regarding student and faculty mobility. This requires the effective implementation of the DEPARTMENTS listed in the Statute of the National University of Asuncion and the mode of SEMESTER Teaching / Learning process, so as to allow student exchanges with universities of other countries.
It is tempting to conclude that the aforementioned changes require an almost complete renovation of the educational paradigms to which the medical professional is accustomed: the pedagogical task requires - ideally - to take a second profession with rules proper of the human sciences of which application to the natural sciences could be particularly complex; a disposition adequate to changes is the best starting point.
