Admitting examination in the Faculty of Medical Sciences

Prof. Dra.

Every year in February, turns up again the issue of the admitting examination to the Faculty of Medical
Sciences of the Asunción's National University. The parents make a showdown, those whose children tried for the 3rd, 4th, even 5th time, suffer the unspeakable facing that tremendous stress situation that all families have to go through together with their sons and daughters who want to be admitted.
800 to 1000 postulants show up and there are only 130 positions for Medicine, 30 places for Kinesiology and Surgical Instrumentation, that is to say that only a bit more than 10 % has a possibility of being admitted. I believe it is high time for us to make a review of the admitting system into our house. To be so rigorous to the undergraduate, has given place to the proliferation of private universities that make a profit with the education of young men who long to be doctors. Then they are thrown into the labour market without adecuate training and compete for residency spots in the I. P. S. (Social Care Institute) and Public Health and Social Welfare Ministry Hospitals, with the doctors who graduated in Cuba, and who are enabled by the Public Health and Social Welfare Ministry to exercise the profession without the rigor that we apply to our pupils in the U.N.A. Then,¿ what sense does it make, such a rigorous selection? We must find a more just way of choosing the best Paraguayans who want to study medicine in the centenarian Faculty of Medical Sciences.
We must choose young men who are the most prepared intellectually with better brains, but in addition we should consider their human capacity, their ethics and sens of morality, which shall accompany them throughout their whole career, since to be a good Doctor it is necessary to to be a good Man, first of all.
