Abstract

BOGARIN-COLMAN, Alan. Capitalism and sustainable development: Are the Development Goals really sustainable?. Rev. cient. cienc. soc. [online]. 2024, vol.6, e601204.  Epub Apr 01, 2024. ISSN 2708-0412.  https://doi.org/10.53732/rccsociales/e601204.

Talking about sustainability in the global social, economic and environmental context, in general, and Latin America, specifically, currently seems to be a contradictio in adjecto. This article contains some reflections, and more than anything, a reasoned series of concerns about the most pressing problems regarding sustainable development and the prevailing capitalist system. In the development of this work, key categories are taken from classical social theory, that is, from authors such as Marx, Durkheim and Weber, to think and rethink the relationship between sustainable development and capitalism. In the first section, capitalism is analyzed, both its limits and contradictions, from these three authors; In the second section, the concept and possible operationalization of sustainable development are interpreted; Finally, using the previously developed categories, some critical interpretations are made about the relationship and compatibility of sustainable development in the systemic framework of capitalism.

Keywords : Sustainable development; capitalism; climate change; social inequality; classical sociology.
