In this article, innovation is seen as a crucial engine for the progress of society, the economy and technology. However, despite its importance, there are various barriers that hinder its development and adoption in different areas. The importance of innovation in organizations allows us to develop a literary review that influences the decision-making criteria throughout the execution of daily tasks. The objective of this literary review is to provide theoretical aspects for the functional development of organizations; critically selecting the most important contributions of innovation and the difficulties it may present during its performance and management.
