Abstract
CASTILLO-ALVARENGA, Mirtha Beatriz and CANESE-CABALLERO, Valentina. Criteria for evaluating language learning applications. Rev. cient. cienc. soc. [online]. 2021, vol.3, n.1, pp.34-48. ISSN 2708-0412. https://doi.org/10.53732/rccsociales/03.01.2021.34.
The use of technology has not only changed today's students, it has redefined student-centered approaches as well as the role of the teacher as we must re-evaluate and adapt our approaches to harness technology effectively. Cell phone applications provide the advantage of being available "at any time and in any place", which makes them especially attractive to complement teaching in multiple ways. The work is part of a study where mobile applications for learning English were evaluated. For this purpose, through a review of the literature, the criteria and indicators were established to evaluate these applications. A “language skills app review rubric” was designed that focuses on eight instructional, design and functionality dimensions (curricular connection, authenticity, feedback, differentiation, performance, sharing, friendliness, and engaging design). This work contributes to the identification of the characteristics that an efficient application for language learning must have. Teachers are advised to select apps that not only reinforce language skills, but are authentic, flexible, easy to use and attractively designed.
