Introduction. Paradoxically, occasional alcohol drinkers and even abstainers can suffer worse health problems than moderate drinkers; a situation that could also arise depending on the age at which the habit began. Objective. To determine the relationship between the age at which alcoholic beverages began to be consumed and the current metabolic rate in adults of the Peruvian population. Materials and Methods. Observational, analytical, retrospective and cross-sectional study of data from the national demographic and family health survey (ENDES). The explanatory variables were: age group, sex, age at which alcoholic beverages began to be consumed, systolic and diastolic blood pressure, height, weight and abdominal circumference, and the response variable was the basal metabolic rate. The Chi-square test, Student's t test for independent samples, Cramer's V, raw and adjusted Odds Ratio were performed using binary logistic regression and Spearman's correlation coefficient. Results. The total population was studied, 15,028 women and 12,379 men. The average basal metabolic rate was lower in adults who began consuming alcoholic beverages at age 20. Women who began drinking alcohol after age 20 had a 2.58 risk of having a current low basal metabolic rate compared to 2.51 in men. The correlation between basal metabolic rate and age of initiation of alcohol consumption was low and negative. Conclusion. Alcohol consumption after age 20 increases the likelihood of a low basal metabolic rate at the current age.
