VERGARA-DARRE, María Victoria. Mental disorders and low levels of psychological well-being in university students. Rev. cient. cienc. salud [online]. 2023, vol.5, e5113.  Epub 29-Jun-2023. ISSN 2664-2891.  https://doi.org/10.53732/rccsalud/2023.e5113.

Introduction: student well-being is a central axis in university quality management since mental health influences the functioning of the individual in various vital areas. Objective: to characterize the state of mental health and the level of psychological well-being of students of the Faculty of Philosophy of the Universidad Nacional del Este (FAFI-UNE). Materials and methods: descriptive-correlational cross-sectional study. Demographic, academic, and mental health data were collected. The Goldberg General Health Questionnaire (GHQ-12) and the Psychological Well-Being Scale (BIEPS-A) with Cronbach's alpha coefficient 0.90 and 0.80, respectively, were used. Results: 266 students participated, 84% female, 76.7% single marital status, 62% working, 52.3% independent and 5% receiving treatment for mental health problems. 65% of the students presented indicators of disorders related to mental health and low levels of psychological well-being, with a high association (p <0.001) between both variables, 77.9% of the students with possible disorders related to mental health they had low levels of psychological well-being compared to 39.3% of those who did not. Conclusion: the high prevalence of mental health problems and low psychological well-being observed in students can affect their performance and achievement of objectives. It is recommended to pay special attention to student well-being through the promotion of mental health with an effective follow-up program for students that includes periodic assessment of needs, production and transmission of knowledge, and effective group interventions.
