Rev. cient. cienc. salud [online]. 2023, vol.5, e5109.  Epub 31-Maio-2023. ISSN 2664-2891.  https://doi.org/10.53732/rccsalud/2023.e5109.

Introduction. Suicide is a complex phenomenon, linked to human nature, and has global representation. Objective. The objective of the study was to determine the prevalence of suicidal ideation among first and second semester medical students at Universidad María Auxiliadora in the year 2022. A sample of 97 medical students was taken using non-probabilistic sampling. Measurement was carried out using the "Beck Scale for Suicide Ideation" questionnaire. The instrument was validated using Cronbach's alpha and demonstrated high reliability with a coefficient alpha of 0.892. The study approach was observational, analytical and cross-sectional. Results. The prevalence of suicidal ideation was found to be 7.1% of the total student population in the first and second semesters at the university. The dimensions with the highest risk were suicide plan or attempt (20.6%), attitudes towards death (16.2%), suicidal thoughts or wishes (12.4%), and suicide attempt realization (12.4%). The sociodemographic factors associated with suicidal ideation were a history of physical abuse or sexual abuse with a p-value of (0.018131). Conclusions. Follow-up and assistance are recommended for the population detected with suicidal ideation to eradicate it and improve the quality of life of students.
