Abstract

VALDEZ, Nathalia; KIEP, Patrick; KEIM, Liz  and  NUNEZ, Heriberto. Cariogenic risk in pediatric patients of the Universidad del Pacífico in 2021. Rev. cient. cienc. salud [online]. 2022, vol.4, n.1, pp.17-23. ISSN 2664-2891.  https://doi.org/10.53732/rccsalud/04.01.2022.17.

Introduction. The cariogenic risk is the probability that a person has of developing caries and is determined by the measurement, in the individual or in a community, of factors such as the susceptibility of the host, the time of exposure to the substrates, the presence of specific microorganisms and the habits. There are different indices for measuring cariogenic risk that have been applied in different contexts and in different population samples. Objective: To determine the cariogenic risk in patients who attended the Pediatric Dentistry clinic of the Faculty of Dentistry of the Universidad del Pacífico in 2021. Methodology. Cross-sectional descriptive observational study in which the cariogenic risk measurement table was applied to 66 patients aged from 3 to 16 years old. The data was recorded in a spreadsheet created with the Microsoft Excel® program and analyzed using the Epi Info™ program. Results. In the examined patients, the level of high cariogenic risk was the most frequent (40.91%). In relation to the gender variable, the level of high cariogenic risk was the most frequent in the female sex (59.26%), while the levels of moderate risk (63.64%) and low risk (58.82%) predominated in the male sex. Conclusion. Most patients have a high level of cariogenic risk, with the most predominant exposure factor being moments of sugar greater than three times per day, followed by the presence of white spots or active lesions.
