Abstract

LAFARJA-DE AVEIRO, Blanca Isabel  and  GIMENEZ-AMARILLA, Salvadora. Sexuality in adults over 60 years of age: Perception of people who attend outpatient consultations in a hospital. Rev. cient. cienc. salud [online]. 2022, vol.4, n.1, pp.4-16. ISSN 2664-2891.  https://doi.org/10.53732/rccsalud/04.01.2022.04.

Introduction. Sexuality is present throughout life and is made up of physiological, psychological and sociocultural factors. It transcends the biological function and takes on a new meaning where the characteristics of its development are expressed in an integral way. Objective. To analyze the perception of adults, over 60 years of age who resort to outpatient consultations in a hospital. Methodology. Non-experimental-cross-sectional design, and with a qualitative case study approach. 10 people between 61 and 87 years old participated: 7 women and 3 men. An in-depth individual interview was applied. Results. The relationship patterns in the couple show that the moral behavior of fidelity is associated with the feminine role, while in the man it is assumed as a person susceptible to letting himself be carried away by the satisfaction of his needs; little or no information on physiological changes was observed, and a focus on genitality as a way of experiencing sexuality. Conclusion. These adults aged 61 to 87 years express sexual desire, but this is inhibited by sociocultural beliefs and values; the associated behaviors are the result of their personal experience, based on what they learned with their peers or partners, and of the teaching model that exert an influence on their perception, observing a lack of knowledge of sexual education.
