Abstract

Introduction: Anemia is one of the most frequent entities in the geriatric population, more frequent after 50 years old and it has been shown that it increases morbidity and mortality and decreases the quality of life of this age group. Objective: To determine the clinical-demographic characteristics of elderly adults with anemia admitted at the Medical Clinic Service in the period 2018-2019. Methodology: Cross-sectional descriptive study of consecutive sampling of patients over 65 years of age with anemia admitted at the national hospital from January 2018 to December 2019. Results: A total of 250 patients were included, of them 53.2% were male, mean age was 74 years and 52.4% came from rural areas. The mean hemoglobin was 11g / dL, 86% were normochromic normocytic and 72.8% were mild anemia. Conclusion: The majority of the patients were male from rural areas with mild, normocytic and normochromic anemia.
