The training of professionals in Health Sciences requires an almost permanent adaptation to respond to a society in continuous transition, especially when social and economic moments are as delicate as the current one that directly influence the health system. In a globalized world in constant change, full of uncertainties, where borders are becoming more diffuse, professionals with new skills are needed to be able to adapt with flexibility to the new times, new roles of teachers and students, as well as new education and evaluation methodologies. Competency-based training (CBT) is the way forward to respond to current socio-health challenges. In this article we try to argue the reasons for the necessary change. We describe the basic profile of a professional in Health Sciences for tomorrow, we expose some of the models of competences of the doctor most accepted at international level, and the experience of the University Hospital Cruces (Spain) are showed and the keys to implement the CBT in the specialty program.
