Abstract. Diverse urban settlements worldwide internally fracture (divide) themselves for several reasons posing a serious risk to their sustainability (i.e., continue inhabiting them). This work analyzes that situation through a series of crosstabulations performed on one of the province of Quebec poorest zones: in the city of Montreal, the Sainte-Marie neighbourhood. Results indicate that the dependent variable « free will to stay (VOPE) » was reported by the residents as being only « regular » with the exception made to its interrelation with two of the independent variables « need for residential improvement (NERE) » and « need for commercial improvement (NCOM) » in the analyzed set. This means that at this moment, the possible attachment to the neighbourhoud feeling is in balance with the emigrating one.
