Abstract: The growing demand for alternative treatment systems for industrial and domestic wastewater has become an area of great interest, placing constructed wetlands as an option of proven efficiency. At the same time, intensive work is being done to find options for the reuse of wastewater according to different possible uses. The aim of this work was to treat a domestic wastewater by means of a constructed wetland of vertical subsurface flow with Typha dominguensis and to evaluate the effectiveness of the reuse of the treated effluent in a NFT-type hydroponic crop of Lactuca sativa. The wetland was operated for three months at a load of 83 g COD/m3 d. The mean removal rates for each parameter were 91% for COD, 64% for TKN, 89% for orthophosphate, 81% for ammonia nitrogen and 88% for faecal coliforms respectively. The results of the evaluation of the reuse of the treated effluent as a hydroponic culture medium indicate that the effluent of the system allows the growth of L. sativa, but in smaller proportion with respect to the growth obtained in the conventional culture medium for hydroponic systems.
